If I am not for myself, then who will be for me? And if I am only for myself, then what am I? And if not now, when?

What is Inspire Michigan! ?

Inspire Michigan! is a competition for Social Entrepreneurial Ideas to help the citizens of Michigan to flourish. To that end, contestants will identify a CORE VALUE (such as self-esteem, creativity, compassion) and will be given 5 minutes to describe a project, organization, or corporation that is designed to bring that value to life in Michigan. The judges of the competition are Michael Strong & Magatte Wade, both internationally known social entrepreneurs who will be visiting CMU during the week of March 22, 2010. In an effort to help students put their ideas for good into action, the Center for Professional and Personal Ethics is sponsoring Inspire Michigan! the first annual Social Entrepreneurship Competition at Central Michigan University.

First Prize
  • A $500 development account with the Center for Professional & Personal Ethics at CMU (Ethics Center)
  • A professional website hosted at the Ethics Center’s Domain
  • A private meeting with two internationally known social entrepreneurs
  • A copy of “Be the Solution” signed by the author, Michael Strong

Second & Third Prizes
  • A $250 development account with the Center for Professional & Personal Ethics at CMU

What is Social Entrepreneurship ?

Social entrepreneurship refers to an approach to organizations -- either non-profit or for-profit -- that is purpose and value driven. Social entrepreneurship is idealism in action. An organization aimed at eradicating educational inequality, such as
Teach for America is an example of a non-profit social entrepreneurial effort. Toms Shoes, which aims to provide needy children with shoes, is an example of a for-profit social entrepreneurial venture. And there are social intreprepreneurs who create value driven programs within already existing organizations. Many RSOs (Registered Student Organizations) at CMU are examples of social intrapreneurship.

The Center would personally like to thank Dr. Mays Moral Problems Class of Fall 2009 for helping to field test this idea. Several students from that class donated money to help sponsor this competition and they are:

1) Sammy Biehl
2)
Stephen Glaab
3)
Lindsay Job
4)
Ashley Maye
5) Linda Popkie
6)
Kelly Smith
7)
Dawn Marentay
8)
Eddie Wesley

Additionally, Dean Bruce Roscoe and the Office of the Dean of Students and the Department of Philosophy & Religion gave generous support to the first Social Entrepreneurship Competition.
